"Muneca" - Circulus Initium Review

Muneca is a heartfelt film. It exudes a unique charm through its characters and the manner in which it deals with its subject matter despite its technical flaws and narrative shortcomings. When Esteban is confronted with finding a purpose in life and getting his nosy father off of his back, he receives a special surprise in the form of Sonia, a sex doll. However, this sex doll is special because it speaks, walks, and dances just like a live woman, and in this case, becomes an inspiration for Esteban’s art and his approach to relationships. The film also comments on sexuality and sexual preference, citing itself as progressive at the same time. Some moments are unusual in execution and the sound\framing\transitions are rough at times but this does not detract severely from following Esteban through his crisis. This film fits itself in a very odd space, namely, that it does not pretend to ground itself in any sort of reality – it takes the comical, and sometimes absurd situations that it creates and uses them mainly to reveal more in the characters. Muneca does not intend to make a groundbreaking statement, it simply shows us a glimpse into situations that are there to entertain and make us recall our own awkward moments and those who help us most on our journey through life.
